Turning Data Into Direction: Making Learning Outcomes Count

In the bustling corridors of higher education, data is everywhere. But without purposeful action, even the most meticulously gathered data can become just another report never to be read again. The true north of assessment isn't merely to collect information—it's to fuel continuous improvement that enhances first and foremost student learning and okay, okay, institutional effectiveness too. When assessment data and reports are actively utilized, they transform from static documents into catalysts for meaningful change.

Types of Data Needed

Each data point matters—especially when aligned with the right stakeholders. 

 

1. Student Learning Outcome Performance (e.g., PLO/CLO scores, rubric-level data)

  • Stakeholders: Faculty, Program Coordinators, Accreditation Officers​

  • Relevance: This is the kind of data that helps everyone stop guessing and start refining. Faculty can see exactly where students are thriving and where they’re struggling, course by course, outcome by outcome. Program coordinators rely on it to understand whether the curriculum is doing what it’s supposed to—and where it might need a rethink. And for accreditation officers: this is concrete evidence of student learning and proof that the institution is truly taking actions to improve student learning (SACSCOC 8.2a anyone?).

2. Disaggregated Outcome Data (by gender, race/ethnicity, major, course section)

  • Stakeholders: Institutional Researchers, Community Engagement Officers, College Deans

  • Relevance: Disaggregating outcome data unveils disparities in student achievement across different demographic groups. By breaking down outcomes across different student populations, institutions can uncover where support is needed most. Researchers use it to spot patterns and disparities. Community engagement officers translate it into action, designing programs that genuinely serve underrepresented students. And deans? They use it to make sure resources land where they’ll have the biggest impact.

3. Curriculum Maps and Alignment Reports

  • Stakeholders: Curriculum Committees, Faculty, Assessment Coordinators​

  • Relevance: Curriculum maps show how individual courses add up to something cohesive and meaningful. Committees use them to identify overlaps, gaps, or misalignments. Faculty get clarity on how their course fits into the larger puzzle, and assessment coordinators track whether updates to the curriculum are actually improving outcomes over time. It’s strategic, it’s efficient, and it’s essential.

4. Assignment-Level Analysis (mean, median, standard deviation, submission rates)

  • Stakeholders: Faculty, Assessment Committees, Department Chairs​

  • Relevance: When you dig into assignment-level data, you’re not just grading papers—you’re gaining insight. Faculty can fine-tune assignments that aren’t quite landing. Assessment committees get a fuller picture of how consistently outcomes are being measured across courses. Department chairs spot broader trends—like where support or revision might be needed—and can make data-informed decisions that help both instructors and students.

5. Course Evaluation Data (e.g., end-of-term surveys, instructor feedback forms)

  • Stakeholders: Faculty, Department Chairs, Faculty Developers, Institutional Effectiveness

  • Relevance: Course evaluations can be a rich source of insight—when we do more than just glance at the numbers. Faculty use them to reflect on what’s working and what might need a tweak. Chairs use them to spot patterns across courses or instructors, guiding thoughtful professional development. For faculty developers, they help shape targeted training. And institutional effectiveness teams use them to track broader shifts in teaching quality and student satisfaction over time.

6. Student Perception Data (e.g., surveys, focus groups, engagement metrics)

  • Stakeholders: Student Affairs, Institutional Effectiveness, Faculty Developers

  • Relevance: Sometimes the most powerful insights come from simply asking students about their experience. Whether it’s a formal survey or a focused discussion, this data helps capture the full student journey. Student affairs professionals use it to enhance support services. Institutional effectiveness teams pair it with outcome data to see the bigger picture. And faculty developers use the feedback to support instructors in creating more engaging, responsive learning environments.

Implementing a robust assessment management software can be a game-changer in centralizing and disseminating assessment data. Imagine the benefits of being able to centralize data storage, have efficient reporting structures, offer real-time insights, and foster collaboration.


One final thought—don’t let the data die on the page. All of this data and reporting should inspire action. A personal opinion of mine is that our outcomes are our roadmap for change. They are the narrative behind the numbers and when embraced holistically across departments and divisions, they can elevate the quality, equity, and impact of higher education for everyone. And when institutions leverage technology, they can more easily ensure that assessment data is not only collected but actively used to inform practices and show the institution's commitment to the reason we are all here—our learners.
